Bienvenue à Jumeirah Primary School! Welcome back to school!
My name is Madame Villeneuve and for the past two years I have been working at JPS, as French Teacher and Co-ordinator of our French ASA for native speakers.
It is a pleasure for me to start this academic year as Head of the French Department and I am delighted to welcome a new member in the French Team, Teresa Crossland. Ms. Crossland is starting her third year at JPS as a Year 1 Teacher. She will be working with us on a part-time basis, together with Mrs. Marchbanks, our Specialist Teaching Assistant.
As you may know, these past two years, we have been using the “flipped classroom”model. Since it has proven to be such a success we will continue to use this pedagogy which promotes independent learning at home before the lesson.
The French homelearning involves watching short video tutorials ‘home-made’ by our Department prior to the lesson, as well as various other online resources. This allows the children to come to class fully prepared to take part confidently in dialogues, games, role plays and many other paired and team fun activities, on a variety of topics such as greetings, pets, family, shopping, hobbies, etc...
This year the children will start their French learning journey in Year 3. They will have a 40- minute lesson per week, during which we will focus on skills such as Collaboration, Creativity , Communication and Developing critical thinking. The children will progress from being able to use simple words to constructing full sentences including the correct use of adjectives, connectives and prepositions.
All our pupils should enjoy their French learning journey through challenging and fun activities and make significant progress throughout the academic year but we need your help!
We would be grateful if you could encourage your children to watch the videos posted on the weebly as many times as they need. This would help to increase their confidence to actively take part with our interactive and communicative activities in class.
You may wish to watch the videos with them and enjoy their French learning journey as a whole family.
I am also very pleased to confirm that this year we will continue with our paid French ASA for French Native Speakers. Since January 2014 we have been offering this ASA through a tailor-made programme based on the French curriculum and adapted to our JPS pupils. This year, we have 53 children registered, from FS2 up to Y6, who will enjoy their one-hour per week ASA in the afternoons and will be given extra specific work, in KS2 only, for their morning French lessons allowing outstanding differentiation during the school day.
Please do not hesitate to contact me by email at [email protected] should you require further information.
Merci.
